May is filling up like crazy as people say goodbye to our fantastic live room here in Ladysmith. We will be closed for the month of June and possibly part of July, though we will be gratefully accepting visitors (especially those of you with power...

2013!
2013!  Here we are, approaching almost 3 years of recording rad bands in a small town! We’ve had a fun and busy winter so far. December belonged to the Victoria bands for the most part with sessions with super soul group, THE CHANTRELLES,  a vist from newcomers GOLDSWORTHY, and our annual Christmas slumber party with the wacky boys of KHBR. Vancouver represented at the end of the month...

Wars '1979 EP'
By Gregory Adams Vancouver pop-punk crew Wars have been pretty quiet since issuing their Pacey from Mighty Ducks LP last year. Sure, the band offered up their live set The Unterrible Brightness of Leaning in January, but they’ve pretty well kept to the practice space throughout the rest of 2012. You can now sample the fruits of their labour, though, via the newly dropped 1979 EP. The title...

So many awesome things to share!  We spent a great week with TOUGH MITTS, working on some industrial tinged dance music. We all wore black and smoked cigarettes. Not really. I think we just all made jokes about the dog and listened to Soft Cell.  We then mixed 10 tracks for Victoria’s BALACADE, including this gorgeous little gem: Vancouver’s THE COURTNEYS spent a wild weekend...

Summer Lovers
Been having a great summer working with some talented folks from all over the Island and Vancouver. Finished up the new BABYSITTER record which should be out by the end of the year. It’s their first full length LP featuring 13 of their best songs taken from their tape series. We did it over 6 days - 3 recording & 3 mixing. Mixed down to 1/4” 2 track at 15ips. It has some great thru effects...

By Gregory Adams  Seattle’s Suicide Squeeze imprint is clearly in the midst of an infatuation with its neighbours to the north in Vancouver. As previously reported, the label issues Nü Sensae’s Sundowning next Tuesday (August 7), and now the label has added another of Lotusland’s punk-oriented bands, Peace, to its roster.  The group’s sophomore set The World Is Too Much...

Alan Cross Approved!
Famed music broadcaster and former host of “The Ongoing History of New Music”, Alan Cross, gives his thumbs up on the Sid Johnson record we worked on over the past year! From his blog: “I really enjoy when an independent artist comes out of the middle of nowhere and is simply good at what they do. When they’re honest, and when they sound like they’ve been places, seen and felt...

Victoria’s BABYSITTER were in this past week tracking for their upcoming album for the label we’re not allowed to mention yet. They return later in the month to mix the album and to finally beat Double Dragon once and for all.     Babysitter with their engineer.    Aiden at the piano Tracking in the Garden  ...

Needles//Pins Talk Debut Album
View original here By Josiah Hughes for Exclaim.  Last summer,we reported that peppy Vancouver garage pop trioNeedles//Pins would be readying an LP to be released on budding Lethbridge, AB punk label Mammoth Cave Recording Co. A fair amount of time has passed since then, but the promise has kept true, as the band’s debut LP 12:34 will be released via the imprint on June 1.  Speaking with...

Punk rock lives at a small town BC studio. But musicians, be prepared. By Geoff Dembicki,  view orignal HERE  The Noise Floor’s zen garden. recordinwithjordan: I started off the year mixing the new Mohawk Lodge record “Damaged Goods” - my 3rd album with them. August!
August has flown by! We did some mastering for EPs by Juvenile Hall and Old Neon, some overdubs with Victoria’s Bankrobber, had a pre-production weekend with The Morning from Vancouver, worked on some commercial pop for Nicholas Krgovich featuring Sarah Sorgiovanni and recorded the Rock of The Woods festival. Bučan Bučan Session - July 2011
Victoria’s Bučan Bučan came and spent a few days with us recently and they brought a whole whack of instruments -  violin, tuba, euphonium, accordion, trumpet, trombone, drums and some gorgeous voices.  We did some scratch vocals outside in the garden at night. It was magical having such pretty voices carry throughout the garden over the sound of the waterfall!  All of them were so nice...

Nicholas Krgovich was in the studio for a week recording vocals for his upcoming album, The Long Hollywood Beat. It’s no wonder Nick had to send a fax to Canada Council telling them...

BABYSITTER cynics who like to party By Patrick Geraghty I think the war between the freaks and jocks was basically annulled in the ’90s, probably around the time Iggy Pop and Geddy Lee were being sanctioned as the official elevator music to American sport (“Lust for Life” was the Vancouver Grizzlies T-shirt canon theme I recall). Thankfully are still a few wartime stragglers...

WOMANKIND rocking recreationally By Joe Smiglicki Womankind is made up of five friends who have been making music together for a couple of years now. Our motivation is just to make music...

Tracked predominantly live off the floor, the songs feature drums, bass, electric guitar, wurlitzer, hammond organ and upright piano. Sid came by again at the end of May to do some experimental jams, including a wicked cover of “Campaigner” by Neil Young.
